How To Organize Your Seeds

Plus my top 5 favorite places to find unique and fun varieties.

If you're like me, which many gardeners are, you have way more seeds than you need. GUILTY!! Are you looking for an easy DIY storage system. Look no further.

If you have only a few packets, a bag or a shoe box works great. Seeds can be stored in a dark cool dry place until you need them.

But, if you need more space, then these storage containers are amazing! They are actually photo storage containers from your local craft store. I have 3 for my flowers seeds and 1 for my vegetable seeds. They nicely seal your seeds and keep them dry, plus it’s super easy to grab one of the containers and take it out to the garden.

There are a few of my cool season seeds that I like to store in the freezer. It’s called stratification. The seed needs to freeze and then thaw before grows. It helps break down the seed coating so the little plant inside can get out. Some of those seeds are bells of Ireland, most herbs, static, strawflower, lisianthus, bulpleurum, foxglove, larkpsur, and many more flowers..

Use a sharpie marker to label the seed containers. It’s easy to wipe off with an alcohol wipe but also lasts for a long time.

My five favorite places to find unique and fun varieties of seeds for the DIY garden enthusiast:

  1. Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds - not only do they have amazing flower seeds, they have the most unique vegetable seeds. If your adventurous and like to try different things than you will really like this company. They put out an amazing seed catalog every year. It’s full of information and absolutely beautiful.

  2. Johnny’s Selected Seed - you cannot go wrong with Johnny Seeds. They are a great company to work with excellent selection and product. I dare say, that you could probably order everything you need from Johnny’s. From vegetables, to bulbs, to flowers and fruit.

  3. The Gardeners Workshop - Lisa Mason Zeigler is a wealth of knowledge. If you want to learn to grow amazing flowers, she is it. Plus, I love her southern accent. She sells most of the products she talks about and uses.

  4. MIGardener - another amazing source of info. MIGardener is located in Michigan and he is amazing. He shares YouTube videos loaded with plant growing information. He focuses a lot on veggies, but most of it can be applied to flowers too. Some day I want to visit his store over on Lake Huron.

  5. GeoSeed - this is where I order 70% of my seeds. This is a no frills company. They do not have an online store and all the plants are listed in Latin. So, if you are not familiar with their Latin names, it’s going to be some work to find what you want. They do not have pictures, and their packaging is simple simple., but you cannot beat their price. They do sell in larger quantities, so if you only need a few seeds, they might not be the place for you. There turn around time is also slower, but their quality has been amazing.

Happy ordering and happy organizing. Tell me your favorite seed companies?

Feeling overwhelmed by this all? Let me do the seed ordering and work for you, pick up the Petal Pickers DIY Cut Garden Kit and enjoy the flowers without having to start it all yourself.
