The Difference Between Grass Fed and Grass Fed/Grain Finished Beef.

When it comes to beef, you may encounter two common terms: grass-fed and grass-fed and grain-finished. Both methods have benefits, and it's helpful to understand what they mean for the animals and the quality of the beef.

Grass-Fed Only

Grass-fed cows eat fresh grass and forage for their entire lives. This method provides a natural diet for the cattle, especially in the warmer months when grass is abundant. For example, our October beef is 100% grass-fed since the cows have access to lush, nutritious grass throughout the growing season. Grass-fed beef tends to have a leaner texture and can have a slightly earthier flavor.

Why it’s good:

- Cows are raised on a natural diet.

- The meat is leaner and has a rich, distinct flavor.

- It's a sustainable option when cows can graze freely on pastures.

Grass-Fed and Grain-Finished

In some cases, cows are fed grass for most of their lives but are given grain during the last few months before they are harvested. For our farm, this happens in the winter when the grass isn’t growing, and we want to ensure the cows get proper nutrition to finish developing. Grain provides extra energy and nutrients that help the cows grow properly during the colder months. The result is beef that has a bit more marbling, which can lead to a more tender and juicy texture.

Why it’s good:

- Grain in the winter ensures the cows are healthy and grow well when pasture is less nutritious.

- The marbling from the grain finish can enhance the flavor and tenderness of the beef.

- It provides a balance between natural grazing and ensuring proper development.

Both Methods Are Acceptable

Both grass-fed and grass-fed/grain-finished approaches have benefits, and neither is inherently better than the other. We aim to use the method that suits the season and the needs of the cattle. Our goal is to raise healthy, happy cows and provide the highest-quality beef, whether it’s grass-fed only or grain-finished. Each type brings something special to the table, and we’re proud to offer both options!
