Zinnia Growing Guide

Zinnias are a must-have for any garden. Known for their vibrant colors and dependable blooms, they’re perfect for both cutting gardens and backyard flower beds. Here’s everything you need to know to grow these beauties successfully.

Quick Overview

  • Common Name: Zinnia

  • Genus/Species: Zinnia elegans, Z. haageana, Z. peruviana

  • Family: Asteraceae

  • Life Cycle: Annual

  • Height: 3-4 feet

  • Spacing: 8-12” (depending on the variety)

  • Bloom Time: 60-80 days after planting

When to Plant

Zinnias are heat lovers, so wait until you’re well past the last frost date, and the soil has warmed up. These plants thrive when temperatures stay above 55°F at night, so make sure there’s no risk of frost before planting.

Soil & Light

For the best results, plant your Zinnias in well-drained, fertile soil. They do well with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Full sun is a must! Zinnias are happiest in bright, sunny spots and do best with a short day length.

Plant Care

  • Spacing: Aim for 8-12 inches between plants to give them room to grow and breathe.

  • Pinching: When your Zinnias reach about a foot tall, pinch them back to the first few sets of leaves. This encourages bushier growth and more blooms.

  • Support: Zinnias are fairly sturdy, but in windy conditions, a little support never hurts. One or two layers of netting or stakes should do the trick.

Watering & Maintenance

Zinnias are relatively drought-tolerant once they’re established, but they still need regular watering. Be careful not to get the foliage too wet, though—this can lead to powdery mildew. Also, remember to deadhead faded blooms regularly to keep the flowers coming.

Harvesting Zinnias

Zinnias are perfect for cut flowers! You can expect the first blooms 60-80 days after planting. Harvest flowers when they are fully open and the stem feels stiff. If the stem wobbles when you gently shake it, the flower isn’t ready, and it won’t last as long in a vase.

Post-Harvest Care

Once cut, place your Zinnias into cool water immediately. For longer vase life, add a floral preservative or a couple of drops of bleach. Zinnias are sensitive to cold, so store them in a warmer area (above 50°F) to keep the petals from browning.

Common Pests and Diseases

Zinnias are generally pest-free but can develop powdery mildew or alternaria leaf spot later in the season. To minimize these, make sure your plants are spaced well apart and avoid overhead watering. Zinnias love good airflow!

Why Benary's Giant Zinnias?

If you’re looking for a Zinnia that stands out, try Benary’s Giant. These professional-quality plants produce large, vibrant, double blooms that are perfect for cutting. Benary’s Giant Zinnias are a "cut-and-come-again" plant, meaning you’ll get multiple harvests over a long season of flowering. Expect them to grow 3-4 feet tall and produce blooms 75-90 days after planting.

  • Type: Tender Annual

  • Light: Full Sun

  • Spacing: 9-12”

Final Tips

  • Watch for Early Budding: Zinnia plugs can sometimes bud early if they become rootbound in their trays. Be sure to plant them out as soon as possible to avoid this.

  • Deadheading is Key: Keep the flowers coming by removing faded blooms before they go to seed. This will keep your plants focused on producing more flowers rather than energy-draining seeds.

Zinnias are one of the easiest and most rewarding flowers to grow. With a little care, you'll enjoy beautiful, vibrant blooms all season long—whether you're adding them to bouquets, gifting them, or just enjoying them in your garden.
