Gardening, and why you should be gardening.

There are some pretty amazing benefits.

Have you ever wondered why all these crazy people subject themselves to spending hours outside weeding, watering, tending to, and staring at their gardens?

I’m not sure they even know it, but they are tapping into a part of God’s creation that has many benefits.

I am pointing out five great benefits of gardening. Of course, there are many more, but these five will hopefully get you thinking about starting a garden. It doesn’t have to be extensive or magnificent. Small plots are great because they are manageable, easier to care for, and can give back.

Benefit #1

Vitamin D - I know, I wouldn’t have necessarily thought of this one either. But we need this vitamin, and the best place to get it is by being outside. I used to be one who would lay out in the sun and soak it all in. However, as I have gotten older and busier, I prefer doing something rather than sweating my brains out in the sun. So gardening brings me outside; an excellent side effect is getting more vitamin D.

Benefit #2

Health and Strength - I love all these side effects of gardening. Gardening burns lots of calories and helps you build muscle strength. The up and down motion, shoveling, lifting, and many movements we don’t make when sitting inside all the time—even walking through the garden and watering plants. Gardening burns many calories, and you can burn those calories while doing something fun. Win-Win!

Benefit #3

Positive impacts on mood - I vouch for this one! There is something special about growing things, nurturing them, and creating with them. I especially love flowers and their impact on my mood and how they liven up a space. Flowers have been scientifically proven to relieve stress and bring genuine joy and happiness to a person. Gardening gives us the satisfaction of hard work and patience. I am working through challenges and the beautiful fruit and flowers of our hard work.

Benefit #4

Encourages Creativity - We all have a creative side inside of us. However, we sometimes need some help bringing it out. There are some any ways to be creative while gardening. Some people love to create beautiful landscapes and gardens. If that isn’t your thing, a simple garden layout can give you flowers to create in other ways: bouquets, tablescapes, posies arrangments, flower crowns, and so much more. I often find it so easy to get lost looking at other people's creations, but going out and doing it yourself can be overwhelming. A small garden filled with flowers can give you the ability to create at your own pace and desire. To play and have fun with no pressure.

Benefit #5

Sharing is Caring - Gardeners are some of the most sharing and kind people around. It makes sense because of the four benefits listed above, but there is more than that. This is my favorite benefit. This is why I grow flowers. Sharing flowers with others is a gift beyond words. I am not sure why that is, but when you think about giving or getting flowers, take a second to think about the feelings in your body. They are happy and pleasant and drive me to take action.
