How to Create a Beautiful Woodland Amaryllis Garden

How to Create a Beautiful Woodland Amaryllis Garden

This time of year, I receive many questions about growing Amaryllis. There are so many different ways to do it, and we often only see one or two, so we can quickly get confused and miss out on some really spectacular ways to showcase this flower.

That’s disappointing to me because Amaryllis are way more than waxed bulbs. Amaryllis can be a rewarding plant to grow that gets bigger and better each year.

I will walk you through the steps of planting this amazing woodland Amaryllis garden. We are about to tap into your creative side. You will love looking at this, even when it’s not blooming. Cause, as I always say, “Amaryllis should be pretty, even when it’s not blooming.”

Here are a couple of things to know before we start.

  1. When sourcing your Amaryllis bulbs, the bigger the bulb, the bigger the show. For this project, I used a jumbo-sized Amaryllis bulb. They measure around 36 to 38 cm.

  2. If you cannot find a jumbo-sized Amaryllis bulb, I recommend planting your Amaryllis in a smaller container or using two or three Amaryllis bulbs. (I also love and highly recommend this.)

    Alrighty! Let’s get started.

But first…. Here is a video showing you exactly how I made this Amaryllis garden. Easy Peasy.

Ok, now that you know what we are making and have an idea of the process, let’s get to planting!

Planting Your Amaryllis Garden.

Step 1: Gather The Supplies You Need

  • Amaryllis bulb (grab one HERE)

  • Rocks

  • A wide glass container. It can be shorter like mine or taller. Either size works.

  • Greenery, such as evergreens

  • Berries, seed heads, dried flowers, sticks, wooden stars

  • Small pine cones

  • Dimensional craft paint

  • Silver and white glitter, or whatever color you desire

  • A couple of small paintbrushes

  • Clippers

  • Moss

  • Iridescent snow-white sprinkles.

Simple Collection of Supplies.

Step 2: Decorate Your Amaryllis Bulb

  • Grab your Dimensional Craft Paint and a small to medium-sized paintbrush.

  • Start slopping that paint on the top part of the Amaryllis bulb, right below and up to the neck, not on the top but around the edges.

  • We want it to look like a snowball.

  • Don’t be afraid to peel away some of the brown layers on your Amaryllis bulb.

  • Once you are satisfied, add your sprinkles and glitter.

  • Set your Amaryllis bulb aside to dry.

Step 3: Add your Layers

  • Layer your rocks, around one to two inches thick, in the bottom of the container.

  • We will use the rocks as drainage and keep our Amaryllis bulb from sitting in the water.

  • Gently nestle your Amaryllis bulb in the rocks.

  • Add a thick layer of moss over the rocks and around your Amaryllis bulb.

Step 4: Add your finished touches.

  • Add a snow-covered look to your pinecones, evergreens, and wooden stars if you use these items.

  • I tend to use the rule of three when adding accessories to my amaryllis garden, but you can do whatever looks good to you!

  • Slowly add bits until the arrangement looks full, woodsy, and magical.

  • Add additional sprinkles over everything.

  • Now, take your iridescent snowflakes and give them a generous dusting overall.

  • Weave a small strand of fairy lights through your design for a unique look. Just be sure to keep the battery pack out of the moisture of the moss and rocks.

Step 5: Water your Woodland Amaryllis Garden

  • Add enough water just to cover the bottom of your Amaryllis garden.

  • This is really important. The water should not be touching your Amaryllis bulb! If the water touches your Amaryllis bulb, it will rot.

  • Periodically check the water level, but definitely don’t sweat about it. Your amaryllis will be fine. You’re safer with less water.

These amaryllis gardens make a thoughtful gift. Imagine receiving one of these as a gift! And when it blooms, it becomes a second moment of remembering the friend who made it, especially for you.
